Sleman, Indonesia - On April 28, 2025, the Jogjakarta Montessori Middle School (JMMS) Community held a meaningful Earth Day celebration together with peers, teachers, and special guests from Dinas Lingkungan Hidup (DLH)—Environmental Services of Sleman Regency—to reflect on the planet’s condition and encompass a hands-on experience towards environmental issues. It is a shared commitment to foster awareness and inspire action towards environmental challenges these days.

The DLH delegation opened the session with an insightful talk about the critical role Earth plays in sustaining life. Their message underscored the urgency of environmental care, encouraging students to move beyond awareness and start taking real, valuable actions to protect the planet.

Throughout the session, the students experienced firsthand an innovative workshop that inspired them to transform plastic waste into creative, functional items. They engaged in several activities, such as creating flowerpot decorations from discarded plastic pieces, crafting mini toys from bottle caps, and designing ornaments from used plastic packaging. As the students worked on various items, they mingled with various plastic wastes and practiced by themselves. These upcycling activities were guided by DLH representatives and JMMS teachers, promoting both teamwork and environmental innovation. At the end of the session, the JMMS community cleaned up together the school environment, exemplifying Earth Day’s valuable reminder.

The students not only learned practical ways to reduce plastic waste but also discovered how creativity and collaboration can contribute to innovative, sustainable solutions. More importantly, they embraced the value of mindfulness toward nature, encouraging them to be one step closer to becoming responsible global citizens and agents of change.
