Sleman, Indonesia - On February 15, 2025, the JMMS Residential Team B embarked on a spirited, fun tour at Malioboro with children from the neighborhood. This program was first conducted this year to enhance students' sense of community, marking the ongoing commitment to JMMS residential program initiatives.
On this fun tour, the students invited the children to join the fun exploration at Malioboro, where they walked through Malioboro Street from the eastern end to the south end. Along the tour, from a point around the railroad to the Zero Point Kilometer Yogyakarta or Titik 0 KM, the students guided the children to delve into the history of a few noteworthy landmarks. Each student led the tour by sharing insights about the historic drugstores, the library, the shopping mall, and Malioboro's signature shopping center, Teras Malioboro. Through this tour guiding opportunity, the students develop their communication skills as well as become able to project information about the related landmarks.
One key discovery on the tour was the Jogja Library Center. The students discovered that it was once the Kolff-Bunning Bookstore, a renowned publication house and bookshop, during the Dutch government era. Another fascinating stop was the Indomaret and Kimia Farma two-story building, which was once the Juliana and Rathkamp drugstores established by the Dutch. These buildings were later state-owned during Soekarno's presidential era and bequeathed the distinctive architecture at Malioboro.
The participating children were mesmerized by the authenticity of the old architecture, curiously asking questions and enthusiastically witnessing every place as they immersed themselves in the stories behind every place. A sense of pride arose as everyone learned that these historical sites have been admitted as Malioboro's cultural heritage landmarks.
Beyond meaningful sightseeing, everyone made a meaningful contribution by picking up litter along Malioboro Street, raising everyone's awareness and care of environmental responsibility, especially in public spaces. This short yet memorable fun tour encouraged the JMMS students and the participating children to keep honoring the cultural heritages, embracing historical richness, and deepen.
