Sleman, Indonesia – On March 20 – 21, 2025, the Jogjakarta Montessori Elementary School (JMES) community initiated the JMES Charity & Garage Sale 2025. In the spirit of the holy month, this meaningful initiative was driven by the positive values of sharing, caring, and compassion.
For over two days, the garage sale was held at the JMES South building, where students and teachers collaborated in the garage sale event. With guidance from teachers, students took the lead in managing each stand, promoting various items such as clothes, books, toys, bags, and shoes. Through this experience, they also had the opportunity to independently organize, communiate, and negotiate the items with consumers, developing their management and marketing skills as well as their confidence.
Along with the bazaar, the students also participated in a charity program held at SD Minomartani 2 and Yayasan Sayap Ibu over two days. Through the “Open Donation” drive, the school community collected groceries including rice, sugar, cooking oil, soy sauce, and noodles, as well as second-hand items like clothes, bags, toys, and shoes. These items were then distributed to the friends from SD Minomartani 2 on the first day and Sayap Ibu orphanage on the second day, uplifting the generosity and care spirit of the day.
These programs are part of the JMES’s commitment to nurturing students’ empathy, gratitude, and social responsibility toward other people across communities. Through these events, the school community is committed to nurturing students’ social experiences as well as cultivating their soft skills.
By taking part in real-world activities, students enhanced self-esteem, a sense of responsibility, and gratitude for life. The experience allowed them to connect more deeply with their community while also growing as individuals, by practicing how to communicate matters, be more brave in making decisions, and stimulate their critical thinking.
Beyond the meaningful development expectation, the fund collected from the bazaar was donated to YAKKUM (Yayasan Kristen untuk Kesehatan Umum). It is an extension of the impact, aimed at supporting and enhancing the community’s well-being, reinforcing the importance of collective social awareness.
At JMES Charity & Garage Sale 2025, the JMES community brought people together and empowered young learners to make a difference, proving that even small hands can make a big impact.
