Sleman, Indonesia - On February 20 - 21, 2025, the Jogjakarta Montessori Elementary School (JMES) Grade 5 students visited Kalurahan Sariharjo as part of an educational initiative to learn more about the structure and operational system of local governance of Sariharjo.
During the visit, the students participated in an informative session where they were introduced to various roles of kalurahan in the Special Region of Yogyakarta, which has a unique nomenclature of districts and sub-districts because of the special affairs of the region, where it follows the Keraton system, a cultural tradition the Special Region of Yogyakarta preserve, such as Lurah, Ulu-ulu, Kamituwa, Jagabaya, Carik, the Governance Affairs, Danarta, Pangripta, Dukuh to Staff. The students also directly met the village head, H. Sarbini, S.Sos, fulfilling their curiosity toward the prominent role of local governance. The students learned in detail the governance framework of the kalurahan, including the roles of the Lurah (village head), village councils, and administrative staff. In a sharing session, the students discovered how public service, community development programs, and decision-making within the village administration are made.
In addition to the learning session, the students were taken on a tour of the Kalurahan Sariharjo office, exploring the divisions and facilities such as the administration office, public service center, and meeting hall, where village officials carry out daily operations. This learning experience allowed students to gain an early understanding of the organization and function of village administration.
The JMES community expressed gratitude for the opportunity to observe and learn firsthand how Kalurahan Sariharjo operates and contributes to the well-being of its residents. This educational visit broadened students' knowledge and inspired them to be more aware and appreciate the local governance's critical role.
