Sleman, Indonesia – The Grade 5 from Jogjakarta Montessori Elementary School (JMES) embarked on an education field trip to Museum Gempa Prof. Dr. Sarwidi at Kaliurang, on February 26, 2025. This time’s learning trip was part of the hands-on learning provided with valuable insights into earthquakes and related facts.
During the visit to Museum Gempa Prof. Dr. Sarwidi, students went sightseeing about the museum’s history, earthquake science, and Barrataga houses, a special type of earthquake-resistance house concept. After having a museum tour, students attended a session on earthquake sharing about the tectonic plate movement, earthquake preparedness simulation, and a fascinating simulation demonstrating the resistance of a Barrataga house miniature during an earthquake. The students excitedly and curiously watched the simulation of the Barrataga house miniature.
A highlight of the trip was an in-depth discussion on Barrataga, a structural innovation designed to minimize earthquake damage. The students were fortunate to meet Prof. Dr. Sarwidi, a leading earthquake expert and lecturer at Universitas Islam Indonesia (UII), as well as the inventor of Barrataga. The students participated in insightful sharing about Barrataga, where they learned about the concept, structure, and advantages of Barrataga design during the earthquake. The session concluded with an interactive Q&A session with Prof. Dr. Sarwidi. Students eagerly asked questions about the features of Barrataga, the world’s most significant earthquake incident, and the fault line Yogyakarta, noting the reality of seismic risks and the importance of preparedness.
The session was a pack of insightful Barrataga innovation concepts and meaningful reflections on earthquake awareness. Students profoundly learned earthquakes are a natural part of Earth’s regeneration process, and humans can reduce significant impacts through proactive safety measurements. These educational experiences enriched students’ knowledge and inspired a sense of responsibility to respond to natural disasters wisely.
