Sleman, Indonesia — In an engaging educational excursion to Sanata Dharma University's Physics Education Department on November 14th, 2024, our sixth-grade students from Jogjakarta Montessori Elementary School (JMES) took part in interactive workshops about magnetism. This time's field trip encouraged students’ critical thinking and problem-solving through experimentation.
The event aimed to stimulate curiosity and deepen students’ comprehension of fundamental scientific concepts through hands-on experiments and demonstrations. Guided by experienced educators and physicists, students explored topics like the characteristics of magnetic fields and the properties of magnets in everyday life. As they observed and experimented with a variety of magnets in the room, they witnessed the power of magnets to draw objects to their surface. Their discovery about the science behind magnets and how it works in our daily lives strengthened their science’s know-how. This outing was an extraordinary opportunity for students to see science in action.
Students also participated in teamwork, including designing simple magnetic levitation systems that demonstrated the principles of electromagnetism. The engaging set-up helped foster collaboration and critical thinking while making science both accessible and fun. In addition to participating in an exciting experiment, the students enjoyed their campus outing by taking a quick excursion to the campus's butterfly-filled park, relaxing everyone's minds at that moment.
Bridging the gap between theory and practice, this magnetism’s experiment uplifts students’ confidence in science!
