Sleman, Indonesia — On November 14th, 2024, Jogjakarta Montessori Middle School (JMMS) students had an inspiring sightseeing and seminar at the Geology Department at Universitas Pembangunan Nasional (UPN) Veteran Yogyakarta. This educational visit was joined by students from grades 7 and 8, provided students with a firsthand look into the world of geology, sparking curiosity and expanding their knowledge of earth sciences.
The seminar was full of enthusiasm and curiosity as students were acknowledged by various geological insights, from Earth’s history to the latest research in geology. The visit offered insightful lectures by the experts and productive group discussions with the faculty members in the field, allowing students to engage in an interactive learning experience.
By combining hands-on activities with expert guidance, the students acquired a whole, authentic learning experience. The outing not only enriched the students’ understanding of geology concepts in a real-world context, but also sparked their curiosity, critical thinking, and problem-solving about the world around them. This educational experience, in line with the Montessori approach, continues to inspire students to explore the natural world with a sense of wonder and inquiry.
To reinforce their learning, students reflected on their experience by choosing to make videos encapsulating their understanding of the geological concepts explored during the visit, enabling them to solidify their knowledge while cultivating a deeper appreciation for geology and Earth’s rich history in a creative outlet. These post-visit activities also nurtured the decision-making opportunity for students, reflecting Montessori’s value of independence.
