Sleman, Indonesia — Jogjakarta Montessori Middle School (JMMS) is thrilled to announce that our Grade 8 students took part in an educational outing to the Parangtritis Lagoon, Gumuk Pasir, and Parangtritis Geomaritime Science Park on August 29, 2024. This excursion was a pivotal part of our educational approach. It was designed to bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world environmental observations, enhancing students’ understanding of science and their connection to the natural world.
The journey began at Parangtritis Lagoon, a renowned coastal environment. Students engaged in detailed environmental observations, examining the lagoon’s diverse flora and fauna. They studied the interactions between various species and their surroundings, gaining insights into the complex relationships that sustain this ecosystem. This hands-on experience gave students a deeper appreciation for the delicate balance of coastal ecosystems, promoting curiosity and independent learning, which are central to JMMS’s educational approach.
The adventure continued at the Parangtritis Geomaritime Science Park, renowned for its pioneering research in coastal and maritime sciences. During a comprehensive guided session, students gained valuable insights into coastal geology and marine biology. They observed marine species in their natural habitats and explored vital scientific concepts such as coastal erosion, sedimentation processes, and the impact of human activities on marine environments. This segment enriched their theoretical knowledge with practical applications, offering a tangible context for the concepts learned and reinforcing their classroom studies.
The final destination was Gumuk Pasir, famous for its striking dunes. Here, students engaged in interactive activities focused on studying the physical geography and effects of wind erosion. By closely observing the formation and structure of these dunes, they connected their theoretical understanding of geology with real-world phenomena. This practical experience deepened their grasp of environmental science and provided a holistic understanding of geological processes.
These enriching experiences reflect JMMS’s commitment to integrating academic learning with practical application, encouraging students to connect their knowledge with real-world contexts. As they continue to explore and learn, we are excited to see how these insights will enhance their understanding and foster a deeper appreciation for environmental science.
